横井英樹経営の赤坂のホテル・ニュージャパンの9階客室から出火、異常乾燥注意報のなか火の回りが速く、死者33名、重軽傷29人を数える史上最大の惨事となる。原因は防火壁やスプリンクラーなどの設置がない欠陥構造のため。

ホテルニュージャパン火災発生で33人死亡。

2/9 火

パイロットの逆噴射操作のため、日航機が着陸直前の東京湾に墜落する。死者は24人。後にパイロットは心身症であったことが判明する。

日本航空350便墜落事故、24人死亡。

大相撲藤島部屋（年寄り藤島、後の二子山、元大関貴ノ花）が部屋開きを行う。

江利チエミが急性心不全か窒息のため自宅で死亡。45歳（誕生:昭和12(1937)/01/11）。「テネシー・ワルツ」でデビューし、戦後30年を歌い続けた歌手で、映画やミュージカルにも活躍した。
