第5回東京国際女子マラソンで佐々木七恵（ヱスビー食品）がフルマラソン初優勝。女子マラソンの国際大会における初の日本人優勝者となる。

静岡県掛川市満水のヤマハリクレーション施設「つま恋」の食堂満水亭でプロパンガスが2回爆発し、食堂が全焼する。社員研修中の東洋工業社員やアルバイトの立教大女子学生ら14人が死亡し、27人が重軽傷をおう。この日食堂をバーベキューガーデンに切り換えたとき従業員が床下のガス栓を閉め忘れたのが原因とされる。
